The PIMCO Foundation
Mission Statement
The PIMCO Foundation is committed to making our communities better, stronger and healthier places to live, learn and work by investing in organizations that empower people globally to reach the long-term goal of living sustainable, rewarding and responsible lives.
Grants
Each year The PIMCO Foundation will direct a considerable portion of its charitable budget toward grants to non-profit agencies, charities, educational institutions and arts organizations. Donations will generally target organizations that give emphasis to certain areas of focus, and The PIMCO Foundation will strive to direct its support to organizations that demonstrate the ability to promote our mission.

Grants from The PIMCO Foundation will be made once per calendar year. Recipients will be eligible to receive funding for three consecutive years after which support can again be requested following a one-year interim period. Particular consideration will be given to organizations or programs that demonstrate cost-effectiveness.

Emphasis is given to:

  • Programs that assist qualified schools to attract under-represented minorities to their business programs, or programs that assist qualified schools to retain under-represented minorities in their business programs;
  • Programs that promote women's health issues;
  • Programs that promote drug and alcohol prevention in elementary, junior, and high schools; and programs that assist children who require assistance due to child abuse;
  • Programs that assist senior citizens;
  • Programs involved in microlending;
  • Programs that promote disabled persons' issues.
  • Programs that promote ocean conservation.
The PIMCO Foundation does not provide support for:
  • Individuals;
  • Political parties, candidates or partisan political organizations;
  • Veterans and labor organizations, fraternal organizations, athletic clubs or social clubs;
  • Sectarian or denominational religious organizations, except for programs which are broadly promoted, available to anyone, and free from religious orientation;
  • Fundraising events (e.g., membership drives, dinners, tournaments and benefits); and
  • Advertising sponsorship.
  • Capital campaigns.
Funding
The PIMCO Foundation will distribute grants once each year.

The process of attaining a grant will involve:

  • Submitting a grant request application. The 2010 grant application will be available in April.
  • Foundation research and review.
  • Foundation selection of grant recipients in September of that year.
  • Payment will be made before the end of the year.
  • The Foundation will follow up with the organization to ensure the grant is being used effectively.
Funding Procedures
Each year, The PIMCO Foundation receives more requests than it can fund. Therefore, the Foundation has established procedures that allow it to allocate its resources as wisely as possible. Receiving and reviewing grant requests at a predetermined time each year allows for a thorough and thoughtful grant-making process.
Grant Focus
The PIMCO Foundation's annual funding cycle is the process through which grant proposals are received from agencies and organizations seeking funds for programs and projects that promote our mission.

Promoting our mission can take place in many forms and can be implemented by many different types of organizations: Schools, Health and Human Services, Arts and Culture, and Civic and Community Services. Annual funding grants allow the Foundation to respond to a broad spectrum of community needs and to partner with non-profit agencies addressing those needs.

Geographical Considerations
Annual funding contributions are made primarily to U.S. based organizations. Priority funding is given to organizations with high concentrations of PIMCO employees located in the area.
Length of Funding Period
Organizations may reapply for funding assistance annually, but grants are made to one organization for no more than three consecutive years. Support may again be requested after a one-year interim period. With the Foundation's approval, exceptions to this policy may be granted to organizations that cannot obtain sufficient support elsewhere to achieve program goals.
Funding Range
Most grants for annual operating expenses or program support range from $5,000 to $25,000.
Funding Cycle
Requests for funding assistance will be accepted starting May 15 and must be postmarked by July 15th to receive consideration for this year's cycle. Awards will be announced by November, with payment to be made before the end of the year. Generally, only one request for funding per organization will be considered during the calendar year. The award of a grant does not necessarily indicate future support will automatically be available.
Criteria
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for a grant:
  • Be previously designated as a qualifying non-profit, tax-exempt organization as defined under Sections 501(c)(3) and 170(b) or the IRS Code. All applicants, other than accredited schools, must send a copy of their IRS designation letter with each grant request.
  • Show program capability, sound fiscal policies, responsible management, evidence of long-range planning and effective use of volunteers, where appropriate.
  • Have a competent, active board of directors providing sound policies and guidance to the organization and to its members.
  • Maintain a list of contributors.
  • Produce a budget, financial statements and a plan for funding beyond the period covered by the proposed contributions, particularly in the case of start-up requests.
  • Show a method of evaluating the results of the proposed project.
The Application
All proposals for consideration must include the following:
  • A completed PIMCO Foundation Grant Application form;
  • A brief description of the organization and the program/project to be funded, including a needs statement, objective, and means of evaluating impact of program (if necessary, more information will be requested);
