PIMCO Colleagues Join a Multi-Company, Multi-Disciplinary Pro Bono Project Team in Ghana

Earlier this year, the PIMCO Foundation U.S. Board approved expansion of the firm’s global pro bono program to Ghana. Three PIMCO colleagues – Marta Bezoari, Austin Cazort, and Tim Quagliarello – will spend the month of June in in Accra, Ghana as part of the Global Health Corporate Champions (GHCC) program.

The GHCC has brought together nine professionals from PIMCO, The Dow Chemical Company, and PricewaterhouseCoopers for a one-month service immersion program in Accra. The projects will focus on addressing clean water, food and nutrition security, and health system strengthening – all key public health issues in underserved communities. This diverse team will leverage their business and operational expertise to improve the effectiveness of three local “host” organizations, leaving in place longer term sustainable capacity.

“These are participants from companies representing a variety of sectors, including finance, professional services and materials technology that you wouldn’t necessarily expect,” said Amanda MacArthur, Vice President for Global Pro Bono and Engagement at PYXERA Global, the GHCC implementation partner. “They’re interested for a number of reasons, ranging from taking part in the rising pro bono movement to raising employees’ global leadership competencies.”

The GHCC is an activity of the USAID Global Health Fellows Program II (GHFP-II), which is executed by the Public Health Institute and addresses immediate and emerging human capital needs in the global health sphere.

PIMCO CEO and PIMCO Foundation U.S. Board President Doug Hodge said, “Good health is fundamental to economic development and social well-being. By investing our most important assets – our people – we believe we can make a difference by contributing skills and capabilities which will strengthen the financial and operating capabilities of key health organizations in the community. We are honored to participate in the GHFP-II program and commend our volunteers for their dedication to the service of others.”

Marta, Austin, and Tim will return to PIMCO in early July. More to come on their projects and experiences.
