Understanding Bond Duration

Gauging interest rate sensitivity

Table showing that bonds with longer durations experience greater value fluctuations. From an initial value of $1,000, a 1% rise reduces the value of a one-year duration bond to $990, a five-year to $950 and a 10-year to $900. A 1% fall in interest rates raises the value to to $1,010, $1,050 and $1,100, respectively.
