The U.S. Federal Reserve held its policy rate steady at 3.75%–4.0% at its October meeting, pausing after September’s 25-basis-point (bp) hike while maintaining a clear tightening bias. We expect another 25-bp hike in December and see a risk of one additional increase in early 2027, followed by an extended hold. In our view, this remains a recalibration of policy rather than the start of a prolonged rate-hiking cycle.

Going into Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference, the central question was why the Fed would wait to hike again when growth remains strong and inflation elevated. Warsh’s explanation was that policymakers want more time to assess how September’s hike and tighter financial conditions are affecting the economy. A majority of the committee, he suggested, believes “the medicine is starting to work.”
